Omega Ploprof 1 / 1 Watch for 2009 Only Watch Auction

By Adam Keith, Associate Timepiece Editor for ViaLuxe

Important Swiss watch brands are in the process of unveiling their unique and exceptional models for the upcoming Only Watch auction in Monaco a special event intended to raise funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. For Omega, the special entry will be a particularly chic rose gold version of its famous Ploprof--a dive watch which made its original appearance in the 1970s. Once favored by Jacques Cousteau, the Ploprof is notable for its unmistakable, massive monocoque case and highly secure rotating bezel, the operation of which is controlled by a security push button.

The Omega Seamaster Ploprof for Only Watch is manufactured entirely from 18-karat rose gold; like its steel counterpart, it features surfaces finished with a brushed texture. A white rubber strap decorated with vertical grooves and the Omega signature coordinates well with the white sapphire-overlaid graduated bezel, and the special dial marked with a "1/1 Only Watch" commemorative designation. The hands and hour indices of this unique Ploprof timepiece are also crafted from rose gold, and feature bold applications of Superluminova compound for robust low-light visibility.

Animating the Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1/1 for Only Watch is the in-house Omega 8501 caliber.  This movement utilizes the acclaimed Co-Axial escapement, and features a freely sprung balance wheel beating at the unconventional pace of 25,200 vibrations per hour. Power reserve is a respectable 60 hours. To signify its manufacture status, Omega has given the 8500 caliber a distinctive Cotes de Geneve en Arabesques decorative pattern, and certified its precision performance through a submission to the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC).  After passing 15 days of tests in various positions and temperatures, each caliber is given the official title of "Chronometer".

Omega's 1/1 Seamaster Ploprof watch in rose gold will be auctioned without a reserve on September 24, 2009 under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.  The funds obtained from it and the other watches featured at Only Watch will go to the Monegasque Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an organization that works internationally with projects related to this debilitating genetic disorder that affects male children particularly.
